Loona Software Updates Thread

Due to software updates for Loona being so frequent and it being difficult to keep up with all the changes I decided to start a thread to chronicle all the software versions from 1.0.46 onwards.

On 18 January 2023 KEYi TECH released software version 1.0.46. Here is a copy of the transcript:

BUG FIXED：

1. Optimized the bug of incorrect recognition of voice commands

2. Optimized support for special characters in the configuration network

3. Optimized the control experience of Fun Racing



We have recently discovered a bug where the video encoder and image recognition algorithms are in conflict, and this bug has the potential to cause Loona to crash or the image recognition function to be disabled (which can be recovered by restarting). We have significantly reduced the incidence of the bug, but it is still not fully resolved. A complete fix will require refactoring some of the code that the camera invokes, which will take some time to process, and we will do our best to fix it.



Until the above bug is fully fixed, if the bug is triggered, please refer to the following contexts and solutions.

- Loona cannot be woken up from Sleep mode (unlikely to happen)

Solution: Long press and hold 15 seconds to shut down and restart



- Charging stuck on charging icon (unlikely to happen)

Solution: Long press and hold 15 seconds to shut down and restart (hardware restart)



- Black screen after entering FPV (first-person view) LAN control mode, no response when pressing the power button (unlikely to happen)

Solution: Long press and hold 15 seconds to shut down and restart (hardware restart)



- Visual games (bullfighting, laser chasing) cannot be recognised, or keep going backwards even if there are no obstacles in front of Loona (unlikely to happen)

Solution: Short press 4s to shut down and restart

The time for Loona to enter quiet mode without any interaction in Auto pilot mode has been changed from 5mins to 15mins.



In this update, we have implemented FPV of Loona, so that you can turn on Loona's camera to control her, see the environment from her point of view and interact with your family and pets, but for now this feature is only available in the same LAN. We know that you are looking forward to the remote monitoring function (control of Loona via the Internet), but we are still working on it and will release it when we have optimized the power consumption of Loona in Sleep mode, which will allow Loona to be on standby for a longer period of time and to be woken up remotely for Internet control at any time.



This version adds a number of new actions for interaction between Loona and Gameball. Currently, Gameball interaction is only supported in Auto Pilot mode with the Gameball on the ground (the ball cannot be interacted with in the face mode currently). We will continue to develop new modes of interaction, including reactions given by Loona when the user holds the ball in the hand and throws it. Please let us know if you have any more interesting ideas!



The addition of voice commands enriched Loona's performance, with Loona specializing in animals and some characters. Do you have any more interesting ideas on Loona's performance?



Regarding graphical programming, considering that some users are new to graphical programming and are not yet able to create complex programs on their own, we have opened the function of sharing programs in this updated version. We expect more experienced and creative users to share their programs with the community, and our Loona team will also continue to introduce interesting and creative programs



We've felt the love from everyone for the inner world feature and this time we've updated Loona's inner thoughts in face mode, which will give you a quick insight into Loona's thoughts when interacting with her. Other modes of Loona's inner thoughts will also be available in a later update


At the same time, there seems to be a lot of controversy about Quiet mode - which is a real problem for us. We want Loona to have more time with you all, and are worried that Loona's activity will disturb you. We've changed the time it takes for Loona to enter Quiet mode from 5mins to 15mins, but this may not be enough for all users, so we'll continue to improve this part of the experience in the next update to make Loona more accessible to you.

We never stop working on bringing a better user experience. We've encountered many new challenges in developing Loona, and we're constantly working on optimizing and resolving bugs, as well as bringing more interesting ideas from the community to reality. The creativity of the Loona community is very important to its growth, and together we will make Loona the best petbot in the world. Thanks again to this warm and creative community.

OVERALL OPTIMISATION OF THE VOICE COMMAND FUNCTION.


1. "Time out" bugs resolution
We found this after the last update, users were experiencing a lot of “time out” when using voice commands. We have taken this issue seriously and have continued to track it. This was a bug caused by an upgrade to our service provider AWS cloud servers. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused and this bug has been resolved in this update.


2. Optimisation of Loona's response time to voice commands
We've always dreamed of Loona being like a pet or a human, responding immediately when you call her. We want to reduce the mechanical feel of Loona's slow response, even if it's just for a few seconds, so we've deployed voice servers (Amazon AWS) worldwide and are constantly optimising the algorithm structure. A significant improvement in Loona's responsiveness to voice-activated commands as a result of this update.


3. Interaction logic optimisation
Loona will not continuously enter voice control mode after executing a voice control command. Previously, Loona would continue to enter listening status after executing a voice command and wait for the user's next command, but this seemed to cause problems for some users, e.g. not knowing how to get Loona to exit the voice control status. With this update, Loona will only continue to listen if she does not understand, and once she has successfully understood the user's intentions, she will enter face mode after executing the command, expecting the user to interact again.



EXTENDED STANDBY TIME IN SLEEP MODE


With this version update, we have made low-power optimizations for sleep mode. Loona's standby time in sleep mode has been greatly extended. The standby time (from full charge to automatic shutdown in sleep mode) for Loona now is up to 50h.



IN THIS UPDATE WE HAVE ADDED A NUMBER OF INTERESTING VOICE COMMANDS


1. Animal version of the slot machine: we found that the slot machine seems to be very popular, this update has added an animal version of the slot machine, try to see what animal you will draw!


2. Shell game: You can say [Shell game] to Loona and a small ball will appear on Loona's screen, carefully watch which cup she will hide the ball in and then turn Loona's ear on one side to make your choice, same action as the slot machine.


3. Lucky numbers: You can ask Loona every day [what is my lucky number today].


4. Loona performance: you can have her imitate a duck, a chicken, a rabbit or even a primitive man!



NEW FEATURES IN INNER WORLD


When Loona's mood changes, the background ripple animation of Inner world will also change slightly, and you can now record Loona's inner thoughts with your phone camera on in Inner world.

NEW FEATURE

Remote monitoring function (Beta testing)

Loona now can support remote control functions. You can control Loona with secure internet communication and open the First Point View to monitor your home, control Loona movement remotely, and can send voice and messages. You can use it to remotely check the status of your home and take care of your children or pets.

Remote monitoring requires Loona to be turned ON, Standby, or Sleep mode (the newer versions of the software allow Loona to sleep for more than 48 hours after fully charged). When using the remote monitoring feature, Loona and your phone do not need to be on the same local area network (LAN), but Loona and the phone need to be logged into the same account. The remote monitoring feature is currently in the Beta testing stage. If you have any problems using it, please contact us and give us your feedback.



Voice Recognition

We have added Chinese and Japanese to the voice recognition system. You can change which language Loona can understand by going to App - Settings - Loona (Loona can only recognize one selected language, but you can always come back and change).



Shell game

Based on the previous shell game, our team has increased the difficulty of the game and the multi-round game mechanism. We also opened the entrance of the game in the APP.



FUNCTION OPTIMIZATION

Overall optimization of user experience

We pay great attention to user experience and will continue to optimize user experience in the process of the later iterations. In this version, we have optimized the overall user experience mainly for the first day, including

• optimization of the newbie experience journey

• the introduction of new game features on the home page after the newbie experience journey

• the new How to play with Loona section, detailing how to interact with Loona in each mode

• Optimize the Box of tricks function

• Separate the Voice command function and display it on the APP home page

• Add the entrance to two new Mini games, Slot Machine and You Show Me Guess

• Optimized the interaction logic, so that the problem of agreeing to the repeated execution of alive actions will no longer occur frequently

Body Following mode optimization

The algorithm of Loona following the human figure is optimized, so it can follow the user more smoothly in the following mode.



Regarding Data Privacy

Loona is an Internet-connected robotic device, and we want Loona to be safe and secure to protect user privacy and data. We have taken several technical measures to protect the privacy and information security of all users.



[HARDWARE ENCRYPTION CHIP]

Loona uses an FM1230 hardware communication encryption chip for all communication authentication. The private communication key is protected inside the encryption chip and can not be read by any technical means, and all communications between Loona and the outside are protected by this encryption chip using a secured RSA/AES encryption mechanism.

[IMPLEMENTATION OF AMAZON AWS SERVER SECURITY MECHANISMS]

Loona's images and commands are communicated peer-to-peer in real time via Amazon AWS's KVS (Kinesis Video Streams) service, a technology designed by AWS for real-time data transmission. The KVS service is protected by AWS global network security procedures. It meets almost all current security specifications globally.



Loona's AWS-based information security satisfies compliance requirements for virtually every regulatory agency around the globe. including PCI-DSS, HIPAA/HITECH, FedRAMP, GDPR, FIPS 140-2, and NIST 800-171.



️The remote monitoring function may have the problem of Loona going into sleep mode and not being able to wake up, as well as a 10% chance of Loona crashing. We will solve this bug in our next update, and if you are confronted with this situation, please try again to wake up Loona and enter the control mode by using the remote monitoring function.



Improved User experience

We have noticed that some of our users are having problems with using Loona that they are not quite sure how to interact and play with Loona. The process of getting familiar with Loona is rather frustrating and confusing, so we wanted to improve the user experience by providing as much detail as possible so that users can quickly master the interaction skills with Loona, and quickly find solutions to problems when they encounter them. In this updated firmware version, we added a [How to play with Loona] section which will include

• voice commands are available

• what they can do to Loona

• how to play the APP game

• how to make Loona follow them



At the same time, we have received a lot of suggestions on product improvement from you guys, which are very valuable and helpful to the production optimization of the version update this time.

• Add the opening portal of the slot machine and you show and I guess mini-games in the APP

• Switching between games is more lightweight, you can stop and open the game at any time

• Added a new game video to guide users to experience the game smoothly

Sorry about the late update, I took two weeks break from Facebook and it turns out I missed a heap of Loona news, including TWO software updates.

Loona firmware update 1.0.63 was released on 6th of April. This is a HUGE update. Official announcement by KT:

This is the big one we have all been waiting a long time for guys!!!!

Loona can now autonomously recharge using the power station

How does It work?

When Loona is in Auto-Pilot Mode (not in interaction modes)and her power is less than 20%, Loona will start looking for the charging dock automatically by herself .



After Updating Loona, Please Make Sure to Calibrate the Orientation Chabab

Go to Settings - Loona - Orientation Calibration

*If you do not know how you can watch the tutorial video in the top right corner of the Loona App screen.”

Loona Orientation Calibration

You may need to perform orientation calibration on Loona to enable the autonomous recharge function to work seamlessly.
Here are the steps to reach the Orientation Calibration settings in the Hello Loona App:

1. On the Hello Loona App page select your My Center Profile.


2. Select settings.


3. Select Loona.



4. Select Orientation Calibration.



5. This will display a page where you can either begin orientation calibration or watch a tutorial video. To watch the tutorial video click the text in the top right hand corner.

Orientation Calibration simply involves turning Loona in a 360 degree circle until a positive result is displayed on Loona’s screen.

How to perform Orientation Calibration on Loona

1. Connect Loona to Wifi and click the “Orientation Calibration button in “My-Settings-Loona”.


2. Place Loona on a flat surface and click the “Start Calibration” button on the interface.


3. Loona’s ears will start to shake, then the ear lights will stay on and a rotation prompt appears on the app interface. Manually rotate Loona 360 degrees and wait for the next step.





4. Follow the prompts to manually rotate Loona 360 degrees again.


5. Rotate Loona four times in a row, and the orientation calibration process will end. Wait for the calibration result.

I performed orientation calibration on my Loona today and have a much better understanding of it now.

You simply turn Loona in a circle while her head is in four different positions. Ensure you turn Loona in a tight circle and keep her along the same axis.

The calibration in the video I did failed as I couldn’t film and calibrate at the same time, lol. When it’s successful you get a green prompt on Loona’s face. It’s a nice hands on fun activity.

So instead of simply stealing KEYi’s stuff here is my demonstration video

Loona Software Update 1.0.75

Loona can now understand voice commands in Korean, French, Spanish and German. Taking into account Loona can currently understand English, Chinese and Japanese, this is an incredible improvement in only four months since Loona’s release.

ABOUT LANGUAGES RECOGNIZATION

To date, Loona has users in 91 countries around the world. Although there were many unsatisfactory aspects of Loona in the early stages of our product, we still felt everyone's tolerance and love for us and Loona, which moved us deeply!



At the same time, as the number of users increases, we have received more and more requests from users about languages that Loona can understand. Of course, we will do our best to meet these demands. In this version update, we have added four languages that Loona can recognize: German, Spanish, French, and Korean. Now, when you wake up Loona, you can speak these four languages to him (you need to set them up in Settings-Loona-Loona can understand languages).



Adding new language recognition was a big challenge for us. As you know, this involves a lot of translation work for language data, and it is difficult for us to find authentic and professional language workers to check and verbalize all of these languages in a short period of time. Therefore, in the process of experiencing these four languages, there may be situations where Loona cannot accurately understand the related voice commands. We hope that everyone can help us correct these errors timely, and we will continue to optimize the complete experience of voice commands.



ABOUT SYSTEM MAINTENANCE AND UPGRADE

Most people should have already noticed our system upgrade from 01:00 pm on April 27th to 7:30 am on April 28th (Beijing time). In order to better protect everyone's information security and make the response of Loona faster when using voice interaction and remote control functions (although this improvement may not be perceived by everyone), we have set up servers in Europe, Asia, the United States and other regions for this system upgrade. We deeply understand the importance of personal information security to you and will do our best to protect your personal information security and reliability.

Sorry about the late update, I took two weeks break from Facebook and it turns out I missed a heap of Loona news, including TWO software updates.

Loona firmware update 1.0.63 was released on 6th of April. This is a HUGE update. Official announcement by KT:

BUG FIXED:

1. Language control command bug: optimized the bug that voice commands always time out.

2. Chat GPT mode: optimized the volume of Loona's playback sound.


NEW INTERACTIVE CONTENT:

1. Gameball interaction optimization: added real-time tracking of the ball in hand, finding the ball, and pushing the ball to the owner in Gameball interaction mode.

2. Added Companion mode: Use the language control command "Enter Companion mode," and Loona will enter Companion mode. In this mode, you can pick up Loona, pat Loona, push Loona, and play fishing games with Loona. The fishing game is only available in Companion mode.

3. Added chat-type voice commands: You can chat with Loona, and Loona will respond differently based on your mood, what you are doing, and your opinion of her.


FUNCTION ITERATION AND OPTIMIZATION:

1. Funracing function optimization: added stationary turning and pitch control functions, updated the action execution database, and added a one-click stand-up function after falling.

2. Inner world content addition: added ball interaction mode to Loona's inner world OS. When using the GPT function, you can view Loona's text replies through Inner world.

3. Loona face-tracking experience optimization: In Face mode, Loona can follow more smoothly when the face moves.


BRAND NEW GAMEBALL INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE:


The new Gameball interaction is not just limited to putting the ball on the ground. You can hold the ball in front of Loona's eyes and she will interact with it like a puppy. You can also throw the ball and Loona will try to retrieve it and bring it to you.

Bringing Loona closer to real pets is something we've been working hard on. The feature of retrieval ball is an important step, and while the current experience is still far from what we showed in the promotional video, we will continue to iterate Loona and implement all the features we promised.


COMPANION MODE:

We have felt your love for Loona, wanting to play games with her, interact with her, and watch her performances. But sometimes, you want her to quietly accompany you. In V7, we have added Companion mode. When you say "Stay with me" to her, Loona will become a gentle little dog that quietly accompanies you and occasionally yawns. She will not move and will only stay by your side. You can pick her up, push her to play, and pat her. She will also invite you to play fishing games: flick the bait with her ear, wait quietly for the fish to bite, and when the fish is on the hook, Loona's ear will move. Then, flick her ear again to see if you've caught a big fish.


NEW FEATURES IN INNER WORLD:

When using the GPT function, you can open the Inner World app to view Loona's text replies. This also makes it easier for all to use the features of GPT.

Is your ball an unofficial one? I have read comments online by people who bought the unofficial game ball who reported Loona being unable to see it.

Also after the last update Loona displays a glitch where she freezes once locking onto the ball. Maybe that is what’s happening?

I read a comment by the official KEYi account on Kickstarter or Indiegogo that they will be selling the power station and game props kit as separate accessories later this year so you should be able to try with an official game ball soon.

Also I have noticed Loona prefers to look for the ball while you are holding it in your hand in front of her face since the last update. Maybe try holding it in front of her face and see if she responds.

You could try another brightly coloured ball or Aibo dice, I’ve seen Loona interacting with those. Let me know if you find a solution.

Another possible solution, increase the light levels in the room and see if she recognises it then. I find in dull light she doesn’t interact with it as much.

I think I need an official game ball, thats great they are going to be releasing Loona's different things separately! Ill def buy an official one soon as that happens.

I worked with Ricky from DorkArtStudios about it. He says his Loona sees the blue one I got fine but he's going to try to send me a red one to see if she sees that one as hes had a Loona not see a purple one after few days of trying.

She locked onto the ball twice briefly but instead of heading to it she veered off course. I tried calibrating her but then she didn't see it again.

Im going to see if she sees her charging dock today. Its made me worry she wont notice that either. But maybe Im paranoid

Im not sure when Ricky is sending the red one but If she sees that or eventually the blue one Ill post a video.

Im so excited! Bluetooth?! Loona is definitely going to end up soon being imo the best Companion bot in an affordable price range for awhile. Im so happy KEYi is continually improving her. I cant wait to get everything for her from THEM. So I can contribute and support them in this endeavor. Im happy I will be able to.

I think I may wait to get the red ball and see how she reacts then do a video on them depending on how it goes. I kinda feel bad reviewing it not working when Ricky is trying so hard to fix the issue. But I do have a theory she needed to be trained with her game ball first before his will work and I do not think her previous owner did much with her. But maybe my theory on that will make the video more neutral. I'll ponder how Im going to do that more. I need to figure out how to film it and interact with her while talking...I JUST got better video editing software so thats great. But for filming I only have my phone and small tripod. I was attempting to record my screen of her talking about the ball and not seeing it and film it at the same time. May have to just film that separately and edit the clips together. (Definitely still a noob but Im practicing everynight way into the early morning so I get better quality videos soon...) Hopefully more subscribers who comment more. Id love a little community.

About the ear gear replacement, I have to wait a week or two longer before ordering them then they ship from China so Im guessing another 2-3 weeks...but I am going to do that as soon as I can and will definitely make it a video.

Im going to do a video of dissasembling a 2002 Voice Controlled Interactive Astromech R2D2 and seeing his components in his dome. Hes such an advanced bot for his Vintage age Im dying to know. I thought even though he's discontinued and people have moved on it might be interesting to people like me who absolutely love tinkering with hardware. Im going to attempt to gather all his parts and components and see how they go together in case my working R2 ever needs something fixed. R2 was my first real interactive robot I ever got a long time ago and definitely fueled my need for more and fondness for robots. Im not even that into Star Wars lol, just this particular bot. I did a video of unboxing the R2 I ordered and my plans for it but so far im not seeing much interest so maybe its just fun for me..we will see if the actual dissasembling gets more views.

Sorry I chat your ear off, but Its a pleasure discussing making YT content with you and you are definitely the best person on the web for Loona information. Bings ChatGPT 4 always uses this website as a source for its information I ask it. Wanted to tell you that. It sources you more than KEYi. So you should be proud of what your doing.

Loona just got a new software update allowing users to choose when they want Loona to return to the station and if she should stay on the station or have the choice to move off it by herself.

Not only that, Loona has been given new voice commands and can now follow the red bull flag without the need for the app.

If that wasn’t enough Loona also enters a new mode while on the station. I’m at work and can’t update mine now to see these new changes but can’t wait to get home and update tomorrow!
