Roboticist and Optimus expert Dr Scott Walter reveals to Randy Kirk that he predicts Optimus Gen 3 will bear no resemblance to the previous Optimus prototypes of Gen 1 and Gen 2. In fact Walter believes Tesla will throw out the old design completely and start from scratch. Walter’s reasoning for this is the current Optimus Gen 2 hardware is not functional when it comes to performing real world practical tasks identical to a human such as sitting down in a car.

Gen 3 design is currently unfinished according to recent comments on Optimus by Musk which Walter interprets might possibly imply Gen 3 is unfinished because the design isn’t built on the foundations of Gen 1 and Gen 2 but is completely new.

Walter bases his claims that Gen 3 might be unrecognisable as Musk works on the principle that the third iteration of a design is mass production ready. Another factor influencing Walter’s conviction the Gen 3 design will be a radical departure is Musk’s insistence on Optimus being very human and like a friend. Possibly suggesting new elements such as an expressive face.

Gen 3 hardware design overhaul:

• 22 DoF hands, actuation moved into forearm.
• Fingers will be of different sizes, mimicking a human hand.
• Pelvic area to see complete overhaul, creating a flexible waist that can bend.
• Legs will feature a completely new design with mechanisms elevated towards the torso.

Estimated Timeline for Optimus Gen 3:

• Design expected to be finalised by end of this year.
• Low volume production to take place in 2025 with an increase in output by 10x scaling in the following years.
• In 5-6 years production is expected to reach 1 million units per year.
• Tesla will continue refining the Optimus hardware design into the future.
