Sony POIQ | CER-1000 (Aibo, Rolly, Xperia Hello! little brother) for sell

For those interested in getting their hands on a Sony POIQ AI Robot (without having to go to Japan 😁), there's an auction currently live on Catawiki : https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/93756622-sony-toy-robot-poiq-cer-1000-2020
(there are still 3 days left before it ends—hope I'm not posting this too late!)

Does anyone know if Sony plans to officially release this robot someday btw?

Hi!

Yes I remember the Sony rolly! Wasn’t it designed as a companion for the Sony Aibo ERS-7? But when that got cancelled was spun off into its own product?

Poiq was created specifically for a Sony research project aimed at developing conversational AI and to research human robot interactions. Possibly for a unrelated companion robot Sony plans to release in future.

The research project ended last year. Support for Poiq’s cloud stopped around September of last year. Poiq will no longer function and I’ve read only the eyes light up when connected to power, it can’t move or talk. Although the head moves up when powered on and into a downward position when the power goes off. It’s basically a very expensive brick and only good for collectors.

Personally if I was going to buy Poiq I would buy one directly from Japan, you can find heaps on them on Japanese auction sites through the proxy From Japan whose site can be found here: https://www.fromjapan.co.jp/en

Someone imported a Poiq from Japan and painted it, you can find a Poiq shell removal guide and more info here:

Thank you for all this information. I had no idea that Rolly was launched as an Aibo companion. That might explain this photo from the Sony archives…

Seeing these two side by side makes the POIQ robot even more desirable hahaha.

It’s hard to believe that Sony went through the effort of developing, producing, and packaging such a well-designed and charming robot, only to do nothing with it (apart from that research program) One day maybe, lucky owners of POIQ will see their unit working again ? Or maybe someone will find a way to access it to play with the most basic features ?

Wow! First time seeing this photo of the 7 with Rolly! Thanks so much for sharing this fascinating piece of Sony history!

Yes I read about the Aibo Rolly connection on a now defunct website of a former Sony employee who mentioned rumours were going around within Sony of a new companion robot that Aibo could follow around and interact with leading up to the cancellation of the Aibo project in 2006

Never realised they got so far as actually creating the promotional material.

From the red sticker on Aibos side this looks like it could be a photo taken during testing of a prototype! Very cool!

Yes Poiq is highly desirable, definitely recommend getting one for the collection. It’s a shame there was nothing further planned for Poiq, but the Poiq logo is actually the Aibo logo rearranged, so who knows maybe Sony will revisit the idea at some point in the future?

🤯 Wow, I didn’t even realize that about the logo, Chris. You’re so right.

It becomes even clearer when you play around with the symmetry.

So maybe one day, POIQ will be able to bark 😁
