Just came across what looks like one of the most promising companion robot projects in years. A company called Familiar Machines and Magic lead by former iRobot co-founder and CEO, Colin Angle, is developing a pet robot known as "Familiars" with a planned launch in 2027.

With their highly expressive plush animatronic design and sophisticated locomotion it’s clear this robot isn’t another gimmicky toy that ends up an expensive paper weight after two weeks. It’s being developed by people who clearly understand why past attempts eventually disappointed users. Angle ran iRobot for nearly 30 years — the only company that has been successful in the consumer robotics space with the Roomba revolution scaling autonomous robot vacuums to over 50 million homes.

Angle revealed that iRobot was originally going to be named Artificial Creatures Inc., which gives real insight into his deep understanding of the space. He emphasized that successful companion robots must overcome three major challenges: getting the form factor right, ensuring safety, security, and privacy, and — most importantly — delivering sustained usefulness so they don’t become boring after a few weeks. These are exactly the traps that have killed off most previous companion robots.

Angle states physical AI and home robotics are a $5 trillion opportunity over the next 20+ years (with consumer home robots making up $2.5 trillion of that slice after factory/warehouse uses). Familiars could genuinely be a game-changer for people wanting a cheap, low-maintenance robotic alternative to a costly and high-maintenance traditional pet.

Key figures from iRobot have gone on to launch their own companion robot companies in the past, highlighting a long-standing interest in this space even during the Roomba era. Most notably, Paolo Pirjanian — who developed core navigation technologies at iRobot — founded Embodied Inc. and created the Moxie robot, widely praised for its emotional intelligence and natural interactions.

Angle has assembled a world-class team of experts in animatronics, robotic design and animation drawing on talent from Disney Imagineering, MIT and Boston Dynamics. This deep lineage in both scalable home robotics and advanced companion AI gives strong confidence that the team at Familiar Machines and Magic is tackling the challenges that have plagued previous companion robots with serious real-world expertise.

Why Familiars seem revolutionary compared to companion robots that have come before:

Convincing Plush Abstract Design: They deliberately avoided dog or cat shapes. By going with an unfamiliar bear form with a deer pattern, the robot sets realistic expectations about what it can and can’t do. No false hope that it will behave exactly like a pet people are familiar with. The design truly stands out — it conveys a believable sense of life with expressive eye and ear movements, natural body language, and a soft plush exterior that makes it feel like a real pet. Combined with fluid, organic quadruped locomotion that looks far from stiff or robotic, Daphne and Winston distinguish themselves from everything that has come before in the companion robot space.

Advanced Navigation: Unlike many stiff robotic designs, Familiars are capable of sophisticated and natural quadruped locomotion that looks remarkably fluid and animal-like. This means the Familiars can stay right by their owner’s side no matter the situation — always present, attentive, and ready to interact.

Full Edge AI – No Cloud Dependency: All intelligence runs locally on the robot. This is massive for privacy, security, and reliability.

Genuine Interaction & Understanding: Responds appropriately to natural human language and shows real agency. Familiars can understand the context of what they’re seeing — a huge leap from even six months ago according to Angle. The goal is a hyper-loyal companion that can even recognize when you’re stuck doomscrolling and help get you off the couch.

Built for Sustained Companionship: Focused on delivering ongoing value so it doesn’t become boring. Angle calls Familiars the coolest robot he’s ever worked on.

Affordable Price Point: Angle hints Familiars will be affordable — positioned so that if you can afford a real pet, you should be able to afford this. The Familiar Machines and Magic team are clearly drawing on Angle’s decades of experience at iRobot, where manufacturing the Roomba at scale and keeping it affordable was always a core focus.

Below you can watch Colin Angle speaking at The Wall Street Journal’s The Future of Everything event this week during the unveiling of his new companies robotic pet. Definitely recommend giving it a watch. Angle mentions Familiars are currently in production and slated to be available for purchase sometime next year.

What do you think about the eyes? Admit first time I saw them I felt something was off. They should definitely consider animating the pupils using a screen inside the curved eyeball to make the animatronic design feel warmer. Although they are growing on me. But could see getting this wrong might be the deciding factor between success or failure.

The eyes actually come across much warmer closer up despite being purely animatronic.
