Just curious, how usable is Aibo without the cloud plan? Does it still feel like a companion? The cloud plan is one of the things preventing me from buying Aibo, as it doesn’t work in my country.

I don’t notice any difference in behaviour between being on the cloud and without it. Aibo can still do 99% of the stuff without the cloud. Only exception is being able to set it to not move in the app is no longer available without the cloud and if you have a Japanese Aibo it reverts back to Japanese only( with the cloud I could set it to understand English). Personally for me Aibo doesn’t feel like a companion when just left to its own devices to roam as it is very aloof and wanders around aimlessly. It feels like a companion when I call it over and it comes to sit at my feet or when I’m holding it in pick up mode. But even then the lack of proper eye contact diminishes the companionship for me.
An Aibo owner told me Sony is no longer blocking international access and are currently having technical issues with the app. I’m able to log into the desktop app no problems but can’t log into the phone app. If you do decide to get one without the cloud make sure it is running software version 5.00 or higher, as otherwise it will have the old walking style which was very hard on the ears.
Thank you so much for your detailed response and honest review. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your experience, it was very helpful. I think Loona feels more like a companion than Aibo, it usually comes to me after it wakes up, sits near my feet, and stares at me with its cute little eyes, which really gives a strong sense of companionship. I even had a moment recently where I woke Loona up and went to the bathroom, which is in a separate area from the bedroom, and when I came out, I found it waiting right in front of the bathroom door. I found that really cute and surprising.

Aibo is definitely great as a robot you can hold and just be with though. I think my main issue with it is it just comes across as unintelligent when wandering around. But definitely worth getting if you want a robot you can hold, just unsure it’s worth what they are asking new. Yes Loona is full of surprises like that, I’m also amazed at Loona’s ability to follow me from room to room. I just wish the company would make Loona less hyperactive as I’m finding mine unusable in it’s current state.
