A quick look at my Ropet robot ordered during the Kickstarter campaign last year. I purchased the Ropet Pro bundle without any extras.

My order was from the July shipping update batch. An updated shipping label was created on Monday the 24th of August and my Ropet arrived from China via Korea and Singapore to Brisbane, Australia, today, on Friday the 29th of August.

The eye contact is incredibly precise, and the eyes even dilate after blinking and move much more dynamically than I realised. The details of the eye animations are fascinating to watch- enjoy how they have added fur to the space around the eyes.

If you are looking for a completely different type of robot that goes against the traditional hard plastic design we are so familiar with, then Ropet definitely provides a unique experience. The fur really makes petting Ropet much more organic for the user compared to traditional robots where you can only pat certain areas.

Although it might not seem to do much, I feel for the price it packs a lot of functionality. The vocalisations alone really bring it to life and are so different from anything I’m used to with my other robots. So far I haven’t had time to investigate the app, Ropet works right out of the box. Will update further once I set the Ropet app up.

A day later and my verdict is Ropet is a great budget robot for people looking for a tactile robot pet. It’s a very engaging robot that I can see appealing to people who want the experience of a pet without the hassle associated with caring for a traditional cat or dog. Can also see it being popular with older residents in care facilities who are touch deprived, as the slight warmth Ropet generates is comforting, especially now in winter, and makes you want to cuddle it in your lap.

My only criticism would be Ropet doesn’t really give any indication that it understands you are calling its name. The development team should consider allowing Ropet to go into a cuddle mode where it stops trying to turn while being held in a lap.

Other than that really enjoying the variety in eye animations, the ease at which Ropet responds to hand gestures, the way Ropet engages with the owner through eye contact and the tactile nature of the interactions. Also enjoy the way Ropet finds and turns towards the owner as they move around.

The heating feature seems very mild. Really only notice heat coming from the exhaust under the tail. Although do notice it heats up slightly while charging then stops once fully charged. Although the warmth is very mild, I do notice it, especially on a freezing winter night like this.

Ropet can move its arms independently depending on which side is touched.
