Please help! Can’t get past “update” screen :(

Very much wanting to say goodbye to Moxie. We haven’t powered her up in a bit due to an international move. I’m trying to get her back on but I’m getting stuck on the iOS app where it’s informing me there is an update available.

Moxie is displaying the QR code on her screen, and the iOS app is forcing this update screen and I’m unable to tap anything, including the “next” button onscreen. Progress indicators don’t change at all. (EDIT: The update screen did finally throw a Bad Request error but I still can’t get around the screen)

And I can’t get to a place in the app where I can do something like just starting over from absolute scratch including reattaching to WiFi and such.

Panicking a bit. Any advice would be amazing. Thank you!!

Double check your phone is connected to Wifi. Then try step 3. If that doesn’t work try step 1.

Moxie’s company Embodied collapsed today. But you should still be able to get Moxie working. My two are working fine internationally right now.

That looks like the update screen that appears the first time you start Moxie.

1. Are you using the same log in details as before? Do you have an existing account or are you setting up from scratch? You can change the Wifi settings on an existing account.

To change the Wifi on an existing account go to the homepage of the app and scroll down past Moxie to Wifi and select change on the right.

2. Have you tried turning Moxie off and then back on to see if the update loads? To start over from scratch you could try unpairing but I think it would be too risky especially if you are logged into the app with an existing account.

To unpair Moxie from the app to start afresh select the gear icon top right. Then scroll down to unpair. Although as Embodied no longer offer support I would only do this as a last resort if all else fails and can’t guarantee you won’t brick your Moxie by doing this as there is nobody to help if attempting to set up a fresh account doesn’t work.

3. To check Moxies Wifi connectivity go to Resources and scroll down to Support and then Check Network.

My two Moxie connecting fine right now.

Thanks for such thorough info. :) A big part of my problem here is that, when using my existing account, I literally cannot get out of that update screen that I posted. There is no way to dismiss it, and tapping the "Next" button does nothing.

Now, I've tried creating a new account just to see if I can get to the point where I can get Moxie set up. In this case, I can get all the way to the QR code step for attaching Moxie to WiFi. However, showing the QR code results in a progress spinner on Moxie's display, but then it immediately goes back to wanting to scan the QR code again. So even with a new account I can't get Moxie past the WiFi step.

So next step. I tried what you suggested… using the new account I set up which does let me use the app without being blocked by that "Update" screen, I clicked into the Support page and hit Check Network. After a long while waiting, it responded with "Success! We're connected and ready to go" just like in your screenshot.

This is all quite odd. Of course Embodied going under doesn't help. I am in the UK and I wonder if that is a factor despite the "success" message after checking network connectivity in the Moxie app. I'm going to try attaching Moxie to a VPN'd WiFi node this evening. :(

Hi, my ancestors are from Scotland haha, I’m in Australia and Moxie is working fine now but connecting can be hit and miss.

If you can’t get the new account to work maybe try logging in with the first existing account and if you have the screen freeze power Moxie off and then on and do the same with your phone. If that doesn’t help you might have to attempt unpairing from the existing original account and set up using a completely new email address.

I was able to set up my second-hand ebay Moxie with a new account despite it already having an existing account attached to the old owner( they had forgotten their app log in details and I didn’t know anything about Moxie at the time). But app access was limited until I paid for the subscription.

Hopefully you can get it set up and enjoy it for a while before the shut down takes effect. Feel free to ask for help, I’m always happy to try and answer any questions.

Thanks so much Chris! Clearly there's a funny bit of old data that is causing the app to throw that update screen at me when I login to the original account. Have tried many times today but seems like there's no way around it.

I did notice that when using a US VPN just on my phone, the Moxie app network check goes way faster, so I'm hopeful that once I wire everything up to the US VPN tonight, things will start working better. ;)

Australia is a long way for traffic to travel but I'm glad that yours are working well there. Do you have them connected via VPN or anything?

No I don’t use VPN. Just local Wifi. Downloaded the app using a US Apple ID. But I heard someone in Germany had to use VPN.

Yes I’m hoping you have success once everything is set up with VPN🤞🤞

InvaderJ - I've found myself in the same situation. Blocked on a mandatory update screen and the app returns Bad Response after some time. I checked my email and it appears I missed a mandatory update.

You may have missed a crucial update that was available until February 2024.
If however, Moxie doesn’t move past the QR code after you scan it with your app, please reach out to our support team before October 31, 2024. After that date, we won’t be able to assist with any Moxie units that missed this update.

It's possible you found yourself in the same situation.
